How can we stop violence against women?

Playing text to speech

Gender violence is one of the oldest and extensive issues that is witnessed in many parts of the world. This comes out physically, sexually, emotionally, and psychologically and it is present in all societies and cultures. This violence does not only have an impact on the victims but related individuals and society in its entirety. It is rooted in gender differences and the cultural norms developed in society that regulate the relationship and use of force by males over females.

Here are a few ways you can ensure safety for women:

1. Listen to and Believe Survivors.

It means that whenever a woman narrates her story or suffering then there is a need to trust and believe her. That will help start opening the cycle of abuse by giving the woman a chance to speak up. It is very important to avoid placing the blame on the victim and focus on the punishment of the offender. Instead of asking why she didn’t leave, tell her, “We get it”. We believe you. We stand with you”.

2. Teaching and learning to all-new generation.

Those values that we pass on to the younger generation creates their attitudes toward gender, respect, and human rights. Begin talking to children about gender and gender stereotypes from an early age. Explain to them all the issues like consent, right over one’s body, and responsibility at the appropriate level. The awareness of the young people about women’s rights would help in the acceptance and regard for women.

3. Take a stand.

Victim survivors require services that include shelters, helplines, and specialist counseling. Make necessary arrangements for these services to reach those who require them. Encourage governments to close funding crevices, invest in prevention, and gather data to support women's and girls’ care.

4. Teach and Advocate for Consent.

Consent should be taught to everyone. Everyone should know that “No” has meaning. To raise awareness of what consent is and isn’t, start with yourself and make it clear to others so that they don’t use terms such as “she was asking for it” or “boys will be boys”. It is essential to educate people about clear consent and encourage that this practice be used to prevent sexual violence.

5. Know the Warning Symptoms of Abuse and How to Assist.

Many kinds of abuse are harmful to the physical body and the mind of the victim. Develop ways of identifying abuse and how to assist an abused family member. Show the victim your concern and guide them to places where they can get assistance. It should be understood that it is possible to get help, and a person should not feel that he or she is fighting with depression all alone.

6. Speak Up

The issue of violence against women is a human rights violation that relies on silence. Speak on this to make others aware of the issue and sympathize with the victims. Support movements against issues like domestic abuse and rape culture. Promote via social media and through the #orangetheworld and #16Daysofactivism hashtags.

7. Towards Ending Rape Culture.

Rape culture is the condoning sexual violence against women. Rape is a big issue and should be treated as such though the culture should be challenged by calling out its own biases and behaviors. Advocate policies and practices that promote gender equality and are aimed at combating rape culture throughout your community.

8. Support Women’s Organizations

If possible, support local and international organizations that advocate for women's empowerment gender equality, rights of women, and survivors. Groups of women such as UN Women and other organizations are very vital in ensuring that violence against women and other rights as well is brought to an end. It is possible to support these organizations in their work and in their mission to save lives and help people.

 9. Be Accountable for Each Other

Violence is rife in public and work areas and includes especially sexual harassment cases. Report any negative action that is evident in cases of harassment to avoid encouraging the perpetrators. Challenge your peers to reflect on their actions and speak up when someone crosses the line. Violence against women should be punished by the law, supporting survivors by providing all the necessary means and protected spaces.

10. Call for Improved Data Collection

To attain better results in the fight against violence, the implementation of effective prevention measures depends on the collection of accurate data. Advocate for governments to invest in gender-sensitive data collection. The first essential precondition for the healing and prevention of violence against women is to understand the magnitude and the kinds of men’s violence against women.

Conclusion

There’s a need for everyone to come up and fight the vice that is ravaging women and girls around the globe. By listening to survivors, educating the next generation, advocating for essential services, promoting consent, recognizing signs of abuse, raising awareness, challenging rape culture, supporting women's organizations, holding each other accountable, and demanding better data collection, we can make significant strides towards a world free from violence against women. We need to work to make society secure and reduce inequality for the women.
