How Did the Congress Party fool India?
Playing text to speech
India is a nation full of potential and equipped with all the natural resources that could have placed India alongside the USA, Japan, or even China. Unfortunately, despite having access to these opportunities for decades, the Indian National Congress, who claimed to be our leaders, kept us stuck. In fact, having the status of the oldest political party in India, Congress made its dominance in the country for most of the period after the British left. Yet, the question remains: What did they accomplish all those years? As it turned out, they were leading the country directly into the pit and missing the train that would bring out the best in India.
After Jawaharlal Nehru’s rule, and from the rule of Indira Gandhi through that of Rajiv Gandhi and the intermittent rule of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Congress stagnated into arrogance and incompetence. The party had abundant opportunities to turn India into a world powerhouse for many decades. The resources were there. The talent was there. But where was the vision? Where was the leadership?
It may be suggested that if Congress had concentrated on effective non-traditional policies and industrialisation during the early times, India might have become as prosperous as Japan and the USA. We turned our backs on visions of fundamentally modernising this country and became engrossed in bureaucracies, corruption, and nepotism while other nations flew by!
However, what can one make of Congress as to why they continued to rule for so many years while they were so poor at governance? Part of the answer lies in a deep-rooted societal flaw: the reasons for the preference of white skin and foreigners in India. Right from colonial times, people developed what I call a "superiority complex" for anything that resembles anything from the West. Congress capitalised on this obsession, beginning with the Nehru family—English-educated.
This shows how the country was left in a pathetic state when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained control. In less than half of the time that Congress took for rule, the BJP for the first time demonstrated to India how effective decisive leadership along with vision can work. Frameworks, measures, information technology, and world alignment—all sectors where Congress had been absent—set an eight into a whole new level under BJP rule.
In the end, the Congress party shamelessly fooled an entire country—and they did it after using the legacy of the past and smooth appearances. They had the time, they had the money, and they had the people behind them. But instead of lifting India to great heights, it pulled India down and, inside twenty years of self-rule, missed the opportunity to make India one of the two or three leading powers of the world.
India is only waking up to reality now.
The harsh truth is undeniable: Congress did not just fail India—they fooled us.
