Lately, it has become a norm for Muslims in India to avoid displaying their religion to ensure they conduct their trader businesses effectively. This has led to the debate about the increasing incidence of Islamophobia and sectarianism or communalism in the country.

For instance, majority of the Muslims in India are afraid that over time their religion is increasingly being removed from public domain because of high incidence of ragging discriminant and even violence. For such hostile acts, they have been compelled to abandon their Muslim given names, adopt western way of dress code and refrain from anythings Islamic by removing Islamic symbols from their outlets. This pressure has made the Muslims alter their dressing code from the civilized and religious wears they used to wear, prompted them to change their religion to suit the Hindu dominated India.

It is worth noting that the so-called Social media has also favored the ingredients of Islamophobia and communal in India. This has lead to spread of fake news hatred speech,considerable amount of misinformation especially to Muslims that at times leads to harassment on the online platforms. This has consequently led to the establishment of ethos of fear and experience of powerlessness in the Muslim community and thus have no other option other than to self-erasing in a bid to avoid being abused on the cyberspace.

However, this particular concept has been taken advantage of by some Muslim in order to ‘dupe’ and defraud the Hindus. That’s why they opt for the Hindu identity by changing their names and their religions although they remain hidden for the opportunities that the religion of Hindus provides. This kind of malpractice brings about lack of confidence among Hindus since they are mostly left feeling swindled most of the time. It is regrettable for the honest individuals who are always victims despite the fact that they have entangled themselves with the few unscrupulous persons. This has enhance confrontation between the two groups and it has also been difficult to broker any reunion of the two parties to help them appreciate each other.

Hiding of identity by Muslims is a concern that cannot be ignored, especially when it comes to its effect on the economy and business. Most of the Muslim women businesses are proving difficult to exist in, as most clients are sometimes high in apprehension of patronizing a Muslim owned business. This has brought down the number of Muslims in business, in innovation, in economic activities, which has at the end affected the economy of the nation.

In the Indian context, the increase in the phenomenon of Muslims concealing their identity is one such trend which is worrisome and calls for urgent solutions.
