Do Muslims in India Need Minority Tag?

Playing text to speech

Should Indian Muslims shun the minority tag? In number, the Muslims are slightly above 18 crores (180 million). They are estimated to be about 15% of my country’s population. But one can also say that they are a second majority. One can hardly find another country where people are not divided into two main groups.

In the same country, 80% of the entire population identifies as Hinduism believers. And in the remaining percentage of 5%, any religion, which includes the believers of Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Parsis, Judaism, and Sikhism. Therefore, in my view, the Muslims in India do not require the minority status at all.

The question of whether Muslims in India require the'minority’ label is a question of considerable social, political, and legal concern. The Muslims in India also form a large population and account for about 200+ million, which makes India the country with the second largest Muslim population. Yet in India, Muslims are recognised according to the Indian constitution as a religious minority. I know that it is a secular nation, and the principle of equal rights for all people in the country is a top priority. Each of the religious communities, such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, or any other, has a right to preserve their separate identity with the support of their state. As much as the ideal political solution should be a state, a country where every Indian is equal and nobody requires protection, it is still not here.the utilisation of this tag requires to be recurrent so as it is not abused or used in a manner that creates animosity.

The soul of India can therefore be said to be its capacity to accommodate every single one of its people. All Hindus, Muslims, and every sect of the community must strive for creating a world

One can easily counter the minority tag given to Muslims through the use of the size of the community. In this context, it becomes hard to even talk about Muslims as the'minority’ because they constitute more than 14% of the entire population of India. Alone in numbers, the Muslims of India are more than the total population of many countries, including some of the Islamic countries.

Therefore, I appreciate the necessity to have a tag for Muslims as the minorities with regard to socio-economic justice with the desire to ensure that they are given equal opportunities in life. But the ultimate vision that should be accomplished is a society where none of the people, including the minorities or the majority, feel the necessity of these tags. Only through such a vision can one constructively strive for ensuring a liberal and equal India where the rights and dignity of each citizen of India are upheld.
