Italian PM giorgia meloni calls her separation from her partner
Playing text to speech
Italy's prime minister on the far right, Giorgia Meloni , has ended her relationship with Andrea Giambruno, a television journalist who has been known for making derogatory and misogynistic remarks.
Meloni announced on social media that his nearly decade-long relationship with Andrea Giambruno has come to an end. This decision comes after two off-air recordings surfaced, revealing Giambruno's inappropriate comments and offensive remarks directed at a female coworker on Mediaset's news talkshow Diario Del Giorno.
The couple has a daughter who is seven years old. Meloni expressed her gratitude to him for the amazing years they shared, the challenges they overcame, and for blessing her with their daughter, Ginevra. "It is now necessary to recognize that our paths have significantly diverged."
In the initial off-air clip, shared on a different Mediaset show, Giambruno expresses discontentment towards the disapproving remarks regarding his hairstyle, followed by exclaiming to his female coworker, "I wish we had met earlier!" In the subsequent recording, he discusses the necessity of adding another participant to the show with a female colleague. "Shall we explore the pleasures of a threesome or perhaps even a foursome?"
Meloni came to Giambruno's defense in September when he suggested that to prevent cases of rape, women should refrain from excessive alcohol consumption. He expressed his thoughts on the matter during a live broadcast following a string of well-known sexual assault incidents.
The pair, who crossed paths at a television studio in 2014, are now parents to a 7-year-old girl. Giambruno, aged 42, is the host of a news show aired on Mediaset, a member of the MFE media conglomerate owned by the successors of the late Silvio Berlusconi. During the recent episode of a Mediaset satirical current affairs TV show, footage from Giambruno's program was aired, revealing offensive language, suggestive gestures towards his groin, and seemingly inappropriate behavior towards a female co-worker.
Giambruno has also been known to make on-air statements in which he dismisses the existence of the climate crisis. "In July, when temperatures in Italy soared to unprecedented heights, he remarked that summer heat is quite common and not an astonishing occurrence."
Meloni stated in her declaration that she would safeguard our identity, protect our bond, and wholeheartedly advocate for a young child who cherishes her parents infinitely more than I ever cherished mine.
The leader, who assumed office in October after her Brothers of Italy party emerged victorious in the general elections, was raised by a single mother and had a distant relationship with her father.
Meloni encountered Giambruno at a Mediaset studio prior to her appearance on a show following a day of engaging in political rallies. During an interview, he shared a story about Meloni, who was so tired that she accidentally handed him a partially eaten banana, thinking he was her assistant, just before going on set. He referred to their encounter as an instant connection that happened out of love.
Mediaset, previously under the ownership of the late politician Silvio Berlusconi, has frequently faced condemnation for its broadcast of content deemed sexist, along with the regular publication of backstage footage from their highly popular show.
Couple's entire conversation
In her social media post, Meloni expressed that our paths have been going in different directions for a while now, and it is finally time to recognize this. I am committed to protecting the bond we shared, safeguarding our friendship, and standing up for a young girl who cherishes her parents, something I was unable to do with my own.
According to Meloni's autobiography, her father was a prison inmate with a drug addiction. Several members of her coalition, such as Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini and Interior Minister Antonio Tajani, along with her own political party Brothers of Italy, expressed their support through heartfelt messages regarding her personal suffering.
She expressed that she had no further comments on the matter and requested her critics to refrain from exploiting her personal issues for personal gain.
"He stated on his canceled television show, which Mediaset ended due to the release of a video showing his misconduct, that one is completely justified in becoming intoxicated while engaging in dancing."
"If you refrain from excessive drinking and stay conscious, it may help you avoid trouble and ultimately discover the solution to your problems."
Meloni claimed to have been "misinterpreted" when asked about Giambruno's remarks regarding violence against women.
There are misinterpretations surrounding him. She expressed her belief in the importance of press freedom and emphasized that she does not dictate his speech.
Meloni has faced extensive backlash for her emphasis on conventional family structures despite not personally marrying Giambruno, and for her efforts to restrict the rights of same-sex parents through the criminalization of surrogacy and the exclusion of one parent's name from birth certificates in areas where her political party holds the majority.
Meloni's spokespeople and political party did not respond to any calls, texts, or emails seeking comment. Giambruno did not receive a response to the text message. The suspension of his show was confirmed by the public affairs office of Mediaset, yet no specific reason was provided.
