Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have teetered on the edge of a full-fledged feud. The Tesla CEO and Facebook founder are both billionaires, and each owns a social media site.

What Drives Their Rivalry?

Two of the world's richest men appear to have a case of rivalry on their hands. After all, both are multibillionaires and wildlysuccessful entrepreneurs. Zuckerberg founded Facebook at age 23 and took the social network public five years later, becoming the youngest self-made billionaire in history. And Musk is the founder of both Tesla and SpaceX, whose efforts have made him one of the world's most prolific innovators.

But while both are incredibly successful, their approaches to business are different. Zuckerberg's approach is more focused on growth and dominating the conversation, while Musk has always been more concerned about building physical products like electric carsand spaceships. That's led to some clashes between the two, with each pushing back against the other's ideas.

Whether those clashes will eventually lead to a real-life cage fight remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: They have a lot of fans cheering them on.

Their Visions of AI

The buzzword of the year —artificial intelligence, or AI— is no longer a sci-fi fantasy. From the facial recognition software in Apple’s iPhone X to the ever-more-savvy responses from digital assistants like Siri and Alexa, AI has found its way into our daily lives. Yet, the promise and peril of this technology is a source of great controversy. Among the most vocal and passionate tech titans arguing for and against it are two bold-face names: Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

The public feud between the billionaires has been going on for years, with the two butting heads over everything from rockets to Facebook. But the latest spat has focused on their differing views of AI.

While Musk, who has long feared that an AI “takeover” by superintelligent machines could wreak havoc on humanity, is still concerned about the threat, Zuckerberg has grown increasingly sanguine about the potential for such an eventuality.

In fact, the Facebook CEO has become so bullish on the subject that he recently chided Musk for being too negative about the tech, prompting the Tesla and SpaceX founder to bristle at his rival. The two have even threatened to duke it out in a cage match. While Musk is the wealthier and taller of the pair, Zuckerberg has a leg up thanks to his prowess in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Their Views on Privacy

Elon Musk has long railed against Facebook, encouraging people to delete the app amid privacy concerns and urging his own companies (Tesla and SpaceX) to ditch it. Zuckerberg has been battling the perception that his firm is a global censor and promoting an alternative, more community-driven social network, but he hasn't been as successful in turning around the public perception of his business as Musk.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder privately grumbled about Zuckerberg to associates for years, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Zuckerberg reportedly resented how quickly Musk was viewed as a tech pioneer and was jealous of his success with Facebook, which has become a household name in the same way as the rockets and electric cars the billionaire built.

Zuckerberg has publicly defended his company, noting that it has been working to integrate messaging services across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. He said the new system will be a “smarter and more thoughtful messaging service, with a focus on security and privacy,” including features such as end-to-end encryption and messages that automatically disappear after a certain period of time.

The two reportedly agreed to a physical cage fight before it was called off (by Musk's mother, reports say). But even if the billionaires don't face off in person, Zuckerberg is poised to do some serious damage to Twitter in the digital realm with his latest move.

Are They Going to Fight?

The feud between these two tech titans is reaching new levels. First came the playful jabs, then a public challenge to a cage match—and now a fight may actually happen.

Zuckerberg, who has a reputation for taking things too seriously, has accepted the challenge. If the fight does occur, it will surely attract a huge audience, not only from the tech world but also from the world of fighting sports. It’s a matchup that would dwarf even the legendary battle between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in terms of braggadocio and physical intensity.

While the two are very different in many ways—Musk focuses his energy on running five companies at once and claims to only eat meat he killed with a bow and arrow—they both have limitless reserves of grit and fitness. Zuckerberg competes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has posted pictures of himself winning competitions on Instagram.

But who will win? With his younger body and training, Zuckerberg seems like the clear winner. Unless Musk is able to up his game with a mix of speed and strength, it looks like he’ll end up losing the fight. The real winners, however, could be the internet and the combat sport of MMA. The UFC, whose CEO is a close friend of Zuckerberg’s, has already been in touch with the pair and is licking his lips at the prospect of putting on the fight.
