Google CEO Sundar Pichai fires over 400 employees in India
Playing text to speech
In India, Google has begun laying off employees and issued pink slips to approximately 450 employees in its offices there. The company sent emails to affected employees. Employees in a variety of roles, including partnerships, sales, and marketing, have been impacted by the action.
The move comes after Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc., announced last month that it would be cutting 12,000 jobs, or six percent of its total workforce. During the pandemic, when internet usage was at an all-time high, the company stated at the time that it hired "for a different economic reality."
After overhiring during the pandemic on the assumption that more people will continue to spend a significant portion of their lives online, the tech industry is currently undergoing significant restructuring. However, it does not appear that has taken place; people's online lives have also improved as the pandemic has eased.
Alphabet had made the announcement that it would be cutting 12,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global workforce. Following that, Microsoft made the announcement that it would be laying off nearly 5% of its workforce, affecting 10,000 employees. Prior to that, Amazon stated that it will lay off close to 18,000 workers, significantly more than was initially anticipated. As part of a restructuring strategy, Salesforce announced that it would lay off approximately 8,000 employees and close some offices.
When asked earlier if the company would fire employees in 2023, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that it is "tough to predict the future." Pichai stated, "Unfortunately, I can't honestly sit here and make forward-looking commitments because it's really hard to predict the future."
On LinkedIn, Kamal Dave, an account manager at Google's Gurugram office, discussed his dismissal. Hello, everyone! Yesterday saw the layoffs at Google India. As a strategic key account manager/consultant at Google, my efforts were directed toward achieving digital marketing goals for a variety of industries at the top of their foodchain in India. I need your support as I search for a new position.
During a recent all-hands meeting with top managers, employees who survived the recent layoffs at Google expressed concern and demanded assurances that their jobs would not be eliminated as well.
Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai had earlier expressed his "deeply sorry" for the workforce reduction, denying that the layoffs were "randomly" carried out.
Pichai stated that he takes "full responsibility for the decisions that led us here" in an email to employees.
Due to the global slowdown and fears of a recession, companies of all sizes have been affected by the worsening funding crisis, and the layoffs at Google's parent company were anticipated.
The firing of 400 employees from Google India has caused quite a stir. Many people are wondering why Sundar Pichai would make such a drastic move.
There are a few possible reasons for this. First, it's possible that Sundar Pichai is simply trying to streamline the company and make it more efficient. Google India has been known to be a bit of a mess, with many employees not really knowing what they're supposed to be doing.
Second, it's possible that Sundar Pichai is trying to send a message to other employees. He may be trying to show that he's not afraid to make tough decisions, even if it means firing someone.
Third, it's possible that Sundar Pichai is trying to save money. Google India is a very expensive place to operate, and by firing 400 employees, Sundar Pichai may be able to save the company millions of dollars.
In my opinion, this move could damage Google's relationship with Indian consumers. The company has been working hard to gain a strong foothold in the country, and this kind of news is likely to turn many people off of its products and services.
