Google announced its plans to lay off approximately 12,000 employees worldwide in January. After Sundar Pichai made his announcement to the public, the first round of layoffs began in the United States. It would appear that termination letters have begun to be sent to employees in the India-specific units. According to a report, the India division of the company has laid off approximately 450 employees. Gurugram, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad are the primary office hubs for Google India.
Additionally, a number of affected members have posted their abrupt departure announcements on LinkedIn.
"Earlier today, we received news of some highly skilled and talented colleagues being affected by the recent layoffs at Google India," a Google India employee named Rajneesh Kumar wrote in a post.
"I was a part of Google India Layoffs yesterday," stated Kamal Dave, an account manager at Google India. As a key strategic Account Manager/Consultant at Google, my efforts were directed toward achieving Digital Marketing Goals for a variety of industries at the top of their food chain in India.
"Gutted to lose a lot of my brilliant colleagues and friends as part of Google's layoffs in Singapore and India last night," writes Saptak Mohanta from the Singapore office. Mohanta was employed by Google as a programmer manager.
The Businessline also looked at an email that was sent to employees by Sanjay Gupta, Country Head and Vice President, Google India, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. "We've already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected," reportedly reads the Pichai email. Due to local laws and practices, this process will take longer in other countries," he continued, "and he accepts full responsibility for the decisions."
Additionally, according to reports, Pichai stated that the business had conducted a "rigorous review across product areas and functions."
After Google employees in the United States were fired last month, many posted their experiences on LinkedIn. According to a number of posts on the platform, both new hires and workers with 20 years of experience were affected.
Nellie, who was a member of the Programme Management and Learning & Development teams, stated in a post that she was fired from Google while she was on maternity leave. Her son was nearby when she read the letter. One affected worker even claimed that layoffs were "random" and that employees were "blindsided," as the decisions were said to not be based on employees' performance.
The news of layoffs at Google India has caused shockwaves in the tech industry and beyond It is a worrying development that highlights how vulnerable even highly sought-after jobs can be to changes in market conditions or business strategy.
