The collapse of the Morbi Bridge: an accident or a planned event?
Playing text to speech
On 30 Oct, the British-era suspension bridge that was built over the Machchhu River in Morbi Town fell. Women and children were among those lost in the tragedy. In the wake of the bridge collapse, up to 141 people have died and numerous more are still unaccounted for.
On November 4th, Morbi District Collector GT Pandya said that Chief Officer of Morbi Municipality Sandipsinh Zala has been suspended by the state Urban Development Department.
The Oreva firm was handed a 15-year contract by the Morbi Municipality for bridge maintenance and repair. Nine people have been detained by police in relation to the bridge fall incident thus far. In the most recent update, the search and rescue effort were suspended on November 3rd night, a period of five days.
According to a witness, some people were observed climbing onto the bridge and tugging its large wires before to the catastrophe, and they may have caused the bridge to collapse by the 'massive crowd' that was on it. There was a large crowd because of the ongoing Diwali holidays and the bridge was a popular tourist destination. The bridge had the capacity to hold 150–200 people, however a cctv image shows that there were close to 500–600 people using it.
Before the bridge was reopened to the public on October 26th, Gujarati New Year, Oreva had been working on its rehabilitation for about seven months. In connection with the bridge collapse in Gujarat's Morbi, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been launched in the Supreme Court. The bridge was reopened following a private inauguration event, but it had not yet received the municipality's 'fitness certificate.' A request to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a retired SC judge has been submitted through the PIL.
According to eyewitnesses, 15 to 20 young people started creating havoc and shaking the bridge in the center of the bridge. People complained to the administrator, but nothing was done.
AAP was suspected of being involved in a few social media as the tweets went viral.
AAP's MLA predicted that something big will happen in Gujarat, and a few other accounts also made the same prediction. This increased suspicion about AAP's participation in the disaster and as it can helpe him in defaming the administration of Modi and lose the forthcoming Gujarat election.
