The rate of gun violence in America has increased considerably over the years. Several incidents have been reported, including the school shootout that took place a few days ago. One such incident took place on Sunday, 19th June 2022 when a gunman opened fire at the Juneteenth concert in Washington D.C.
The shooting occurred at a crowded intersection near 14th and U streets in Northwest Washington, less than 2 miles from the White House, as a crowd gathered to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans on Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans in the United States. An adolescent was dead, and three others were injured, including a police officer.
The incident is thought to have started after a scuffle when one guy pulled out a gun and started shooting. The cop who intervened to bring the situation under control was shot in the lower extremities but is expected to live, according to police chief Contee. The shooting is the latest in a string of public shootings in the United States in recent months.
The DC Police Department announced at a press conference, 'one juvenile at this point, it appears, is dead. 2 other civilians and 1 police officer are injured. They are recovering.'
The DC Police Department had earlier tweeted, 'MPD (Metropolitan Police Department) is responding to the situation in the area of 14th and U Street, NW, for a shooting incident in which multiple people have been shot, including an MPD officer. Media staging at 15th and U Street, NW. Chief Contee to provide a media briefing.' A police officer was also shot during the incident, according to the DC Police Union. It took to Twitter to say: 'We can confirm that one of our members working in the area of 14th and U St NW has been shot. The member has been transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.'
This came after shots were fired inside a huge retail mall in Virginia, near Washington, DC, the day before.
On May 24, a mass shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in which multiple people were killed, including 19 children. According to CNN, this was the worst incident since the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Florida, which killed 17 people.
A week later, on May 31, shooting occurred at a high school graduation ceremony in New Orleans, killing an elderly woman and injuring two others. According to NBC News, the incident occurred outside the Convocation Center on the campus of Xavier University, where graduates of Morris Jeff High School were assembled.
According to CNN, at least four individuals were murdered in a shooting incident on a hospital campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 1.
In the United States, there has been an increase in the number of shootouts. In the wake of rising gun violence in the United States, President Joe Biden stated that the country needs to prohibit assault rifles or raise the age of purchase from 18 to 21 to protect children and families.
'We need to ban assault weapons. ... if we can't, then we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21. Ban high-capacity magazines. Strengthen background checks. Enact safe storage laws and red flag laws. Repeal gun manufacturers' immunity from liability,' he said.
He went on to say that this isn't about robbing someone of their rights. 'It's about protecting children. It's about protecting families. It's about protecting communities. It's about protecting our freedoms to go to school, to a grocery store, to go to church without being shot and killed,' he said.
'This is not about taking away anyone's guns...we believe that we should be treating responsible gun owners as examples of how every gun owner should behave,' he said.
