Mr. Rizvi today reported having converted in a ceremony held at Arya Samaj Temple in Ghaziabad in the presence of Swami Omkar Anand, who heads the religious center.
Prior to this conversion ceremony, Syed Waseem Rizvi decided to celebrate Shivratri Festival with Hindus in Mohan Shroff's Dharamshala on February 25 and spent two hours talking about similarities between Islam and Hinduism.
It was not a sudden decision as Mr. Rizvi had been veering towards Hindus since his controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the ban imposed on loudspeakers in mosques by the Uttar Pradesh government.
'My father Syed Waseem Hasnain Rizvi, was a Hindu who married my mother Ayesha Begum (a Shia Muslim). My grandfather late Qazi Fazlullah Rizvi was also a Hindu from the Brahmin caste. 'I believe Islam does not give any special status to its followers and anyone can become a Muslim by uttering the Karma. But, I found Hinduism more inclusive as it preaches that all humans are equal regardless of their caste or religion,' he added.
Swami Omkar Anand, who presided over the conversion ceremony, said that Syed Waseem Rizvi has embraced Hinduism after proper study and understanding of the religion. 'He is not doing this for any political gain but because he believes in the philosophy of Hinduism,' the Swami said.
This conversion has created a huge uproar among Muslims in Uttar Pradesh with many calling it an act of treachery while others see it as an attempt by Mr. Rizvi to come back the good books of the Uttar Pradesh government.
'He is an agent of BJP and RSS who want to insult Islam. He has become a victim of their conspiracy,' said Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahli, the Imam Eidgah at Lucknow.
Mr. Rizvi's decision has also prompted Shia clerics to call for his ex-communication from the community. 'His act of conversion is un-Islamic and he will be punished by Allah in this world itself. We ask all Muslims to boycott him with immediate effect,' said Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, senior Shia cleric while talking to media persons.
