Amazon Cargo Plane Crash in Miami Kills at Least Five

Miami, September 7, 2026 — At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport on Sunday, authorities said.

The Boeing 767-300, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, was operated by cargo carrier 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. The aircraft had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and went beyond the end of a diagonal runway shortly before 2 p.m. local time. It subsequently struck several vehicles and caught fire. 

Emergency crews rush to the scene

The crash triggered a major emergency response at the airport. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 60 units as firefighters battled the blaze and searched for people trapped in vehicles and inside the aircraft.

Five people were hospitalized following the crash, including three who were reported to be in critical condition. The pilot and co-pilot were among those trapped in the aircraft as rescue teams worked to reach them.

The aircraft eventually came to rest beyond the runway after crossing a roadway. Witnesses and video from the scene showed heavy smoke and flames rising from the wreckage.

Airport operations disrupted

The accident forced Miami International Airport to temporarily halt operations, with runways and taxiways closed while emergency crews responded. The disruption caused significant flight delays and cancellations at one of the United States' busiest airports.

The incident occurred during the busy Labor Day weekend, adding to the impact on travelers passing through South Florida.

Investigation underway

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight data, weather conditions, runway circumstances and the events leading up to the runway overrun. Authorities have not yet identified a definitive cause.

Amazon responds

Amazon said the aircraft was operated by 21 Air and experienced an incident while attempting to land. The company said it was working closely with local authorities and was focused on supporting those affected by the crash.

The tragedy has renewed attention on aviation safety and the risks associated with runway overruns. As investigators begin their work, officials are expected to provide more information about what happened and whether any factors contributed to the aircraft failing to stop safely.

For now, the priority remains caring for the injured, supporting the victims' families and determining how the crash occurred.
