Google’s latest Android 17 beta update shows that smartphone security is becoming less about simply protecting the device and more about preventing specific attacks before users can fall victim to them.
The standout addition in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 is protection against call-forwarding fraud. Google is restricting apps from programmatically triggering certain call-forwarding USSD codes and adding safeguards around manual requests. That is a meaningful change because scammers can use call forwarding to redirect incoming calls away from a victim’s phone, potentially interfering with account-recovery or verification processes.
