Trump vs Netanyahu over Lebanon; Iran 'allows' 24 ships to pass Hormuz

Negotiations between the US and Iran face deep friction over Israel’s escalating offensive in Lebanon, creating a direct diplomatic rift between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Amidst this volatility, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced it has permitted 24 commercial vessels to transit the highly contested Strait of Hormuz over a 24-hour period under strict regime-controlled "management protocols".

The Trump vs. Netanyahu Rift Over Lebanon

The broader US–Iran peace framework has been severely strained by escalating actions on the Israel-Lebanon front:

  • The Diplomatic Friction: President Trump announced on Truth Social that he held separate calls with Netanyahu and Hezbollah representatives, claiming an agreement was reached for "all shooting to stop" and ensuring no Israeli troops enter Beirut.
  • Netanyahu's Defiance: Despite Trump's push for a regional de-escalation to secure his multi-day US–Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Israeli military has significantly expanded its invasion and ramped up heavy airstrikes inside Lebanon. Israel claims the US privately backs its right to strike Beirut if Hezbollah continues to target northern Israel.
  • Iran’s Reaction: Tehran cited Trump’s failure to contain Israeli actions in Lebanon as the core reason for suspending direct message exchanges with the US, using the Lebanon crisis to protect its asset, Hezbollah.

Hormuz Transit and The Shipping Standoff

While political negotiations stall, a tense game of control is playing out in the global energy corridor:

  • Controlled Access: The IRGC Navy confirmed that 24 authorized ships were "allowed" to pass within 24 hours. However, Iranian state media clarified that the flow is strictly regulated under Tehran's unilateral permits, warning that any vessel entering without explicit IRGC clearance will face a "strong response".
  • Conflicting Claims on Blockade: Trump previously claimed he was lifting the US naval blockade to allow international shipping to head home. Conversely, the US military and international intelligence experts state the blockade on Iranian ports remains active to prevent oil revenue generation until a final deal is formally signed.
  • Trump’s Warning: Trump has publicly warned Iran against exploiting its position to extract illegal transit fees or tolls from the commercial tankers passing through the strait.

Despite the chaotic back-and-forth and threats of Iran opening "other fronts", Trump insists that indirect talks with Tehran are still continuing at a "rapid pace" to salvage a 60-day ceasefire extension.
