During the last ten years, social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and X have become determinants of being social online. However, there is an interesting trend that has been unfolding in the background: it is no longer only competition, but online gaming is the most real social space on the internet.

It is more authentic than any social media, and the comparison between online gaming and traditional social media is not even necessary in my opinion.

Social media is mostly inactive. You scroll, react, comment, like. However, online games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, and Call of Duty: Warzone form collective missions, collective objectives, and collective anarchy.

You have not merely consumed content when you win a match, or clear a difficult level together, you have created a memory. So the interactive aspect is not performed but made manifest by that element of collaboration.

That difference matters.

Communication on the social media is toxic and disjointed, and this is one of the largest vices. There are a lot of misunderstandings in the comment section since the tone does not translate well when in the text.

Gaming changed that.

Yes, it is possible to make avatars customizable, particularly in a place such as VRChat, but it is not about perfection but about participation.

It is not how beautiful your life appears but how you play, cooperate and contribute.

In gaming:

Such presence generates social chemistry better than smooth highlight films can ever do.

Communities Form Around Action, Not Algorithms

The feeds of social media are algorithmic in nature. They decide what you see. They drive engagement measures. They maximize outrage since outrage goes viral.

Gaming communities are different.

They’re built around:

• Shared skill progression
• Common goals

Such communities usually carry into other platforms such as Discord and are not rooted in content consumption, which is action.
