Sharing my UPSC preparation journey: From a graduate to an IAS

Playing text to speech

When one steps into the UPSC preparation, it appears to be similar to beginning a journey with thrill and fear all rolled into one. When I joined a centre, holding a graduate degree in hand and aspiring to be an IAS officer, the process was not well defined at all. This is a real and straightforward look at what I did, what got in my way, what methods helped or hindered, and what I discovered in the process of knowing me better.

Setting the Foundation: Why I Chose UPSC

Choosing UPSC is not a decision taken in a hurry. That takes dedication, hard work, and willingness to transform your entire lifestyle around. I needed the job that will positively change people’s lives, help society, and show me the different aspects of India. This is because all the above goals and objectives were encompassed in the role of an IAS officer, thus I was willing to take up the challenge.

Building a Plan: Mapping of Syllabus and Resources

The UPSC syllabus is huge; they range from Indian history to international relations. I soon discovered that the wavering approach did not suit me, thus I began with an approach. Here’s how I broke down my preparation:

Understanding the Syllabus: I copied all the syllabus and planned them accordingly as per subjects. This enabled me to know to what extent I had covered the topics on my course and to what extent I was still short of fulfilling the set goals.

Choosing the Right Materials: At times, there is too much of everything, but I confined myself to such regular books as Laxmikant for Politics, Spectrum for Modern History, and the basics from NCERT books.

Daily Current Affairs: To ensure a regular update was done, I read newspapers like The Hindu and used compilations from credible sources done on a monthly basis. UPSC always relates questions to some happenings in the world; hence, it was very vital to do so.

The Preparation Routine: Consistency Over Intensity

With UPSC, one has to be repetitive in every which way; repetition is the key here. To facilitate my study regime, I designed a daily timetable over the periods of reading, notetaking, revision, and practice tests.

Mornings: I began with newspaper reading, which I believe assisted me in current events and in the understanding of the texts.

Afternoons: Best suited for subject areas that involve little or no movement of the body, they include history, geography, and politics.

Evenings: Emphasised on answer writing (as it forms the most basic format for any essay) and mock tests where it is most important to work on writing fast and concisely.

Dealing with failures or challenges in a project or a venture

Not everything went smoothly. It bothered me that I barely failed to make a pass mark in my first preliminary at Mbeya. But failure serves its purpose—it helped me figure out where I stand; it helped me reconsider my strategies; and it helped me become more disciplined. After this, I paid much more attention to mock exams, and for disciplines where my confidence level was low, especially economics and essays, I ensured that I improved. Every cause of failure led one towards the achievement of the desired goal.

The Result: The Moment of Truth

At last, after consistent hard work, I passed the UPSC examination. Just hearing my name from the list was a dream come true—something I was relieved, grateful, and proud of. It made every night that was spent working late into the night and every single major life sacrifice worthwhile. I was a new man and a new IAS officer when I made it in this manner.

Conclusion: Make Your Dream Count

The process of cracking IAS is very competitive, but it’s one of the most fulfilling pursuits. Odd are if you are caught on this side, make the most of every opportunity and consider each setback as a stepping stone. It is an inspiring and motivational piece, which means to say: You have the potential, so you can accomplish your dreams if only you are determined enough and use the right strategies coupled with the right amount of perseverance. As you go through the small steps in the day, remind yourself that you are closer to creating real change tomorrow.
