Why India should remove the 'Secular' status from the country?
Playing text to speech
India is a diversified nation. India is famous for its religion, culture , heritage and beauty. India has over 80% Hindu population in the country but it is still called a secular nation because India has always given equal respect to every religion Since the past few years the demand for making India a Hindu nation has been raised by many citizens , social groups , religious organization and so on. The Hindu population wants India to be called as a Hindu nation as Hindus have majority in India and also because India is known as ‘Hindustan’ since ancient times. People are raising questions that if there can be 57 Islamic nation, more than 90 Christian nation , 6 Buddhist nation and 1 Jewish nation than why there can’t be one Hindu nation in the world.
The word ‘secular’ was first brought before constituent assembly. There wasn’t a perfect definition of it. At that time the word secular was just introduced to reject the idea of Bharatiya civilization state. Many attempts were made on three different occasions to introduce this term but were rejected. Before November 1950 the word secular was not present in the preamble. In 1976 the 42 amendment of the Constitution of India had inserted the word secular into the preamble thus making India a secular nation. The word secular has always been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The word secular or secularism generally means ‘separation of religion and state’.
To be honest India is not a secular country anymore because India is lacking the basic concept of secularism. In a secular nation all the citizens irrespective of there religion and cast would be covered under same set of laws. In India people of different religion belief follow different laws. Hindus, Muslims ,Christian and Parsis inherit different laws for marriage, adoption, divorce. Hindus have different marriage acts whereas Muslims have there own marriage laws. In India Hindu temples are under government control but churches and mosques are completely autonomous. Government can take money from Hindu temples but not from other places of worship of other religions. Even minorities and majorities schools have different laws. If the country is not following the concept of secularism properly than why not just remove the word and called India a Hindu nation. The only reason why India is secular because the majority believes in pluralism.
Secularism means no role of governance in religion but that never was the case in India. India has it’s own definition of secular nation. Indian secularism is in crisis . India truly needs a new definition of secularism one based on freedom of religion, equality before law and separation of religion and state. Indian secularism fails as it allows government to grant religious freedom but not to treat religion equally. India is a pseudo secular nation. India isn’t a truly secular nation as it is loosing the true sense of secularism. For being truly secular there should be a uniform civil code for all irrespective of there religion.
Today even the Indian government and political parties both are using this word for just fulfilling there political agendas. They have there selfish motive behind raising the issue of secularism. They are the ones who add fuel in the religious issues and create a situation of tension between the people of various religion. It is the government who is responsible for pseudo secularism. It is better that India should remove its secular status as it is lacking the basic principle of secularism.
