Why is Muslim Population Increasing in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee?
Playing text to speech
The more the population grows, more would be the benefits
After the partition of 1947, West Bengal had been facing societal dislocations as it failed to create public consciousness and bonding. There was a time when Muslims had migrated from Bengal for their betterment, but now TMC has been commanding a significant proportion of their allegiance. It was a time when 125 seats in Bengal election had considerable count and feedback from Muslim Communities.
The CPI(M) led by the Front won 102 in total during the 2006 elections, which barged for a whopping 235 seats in the Assembly Election. Later, in 2011 TMC Congress alliance got 95 votes from the 125 Muslim dominated seats, thus clicking upon the present scenario of their uprising. Although, as per 2021 records of election it fell again, leading to fall of TMC due to Muslim candidates, and formation of the LF+Congress Alliance after all. But as Mamata can take defeat she appeared from the other side and tried to repent her mistakes with the Muslims, since she well knows, Hindus would never support her.
Relations of Muslims with West Bengal
To talk about the education attainment, Muslim Communities exceed here, despite just constituting 27% of total state population. There has been only 12% of Muslim students as per the AISHE records of the Academic year 2021-22, and this imbalance has particularly acted as a stark in the education field. For instance, Jadavpur University which generally has enrollment of more than 8500 students, where only 50-60 seats, i.e. 0.6% are occupied by the Muslims. Currently,
Bengal has got a marginal rise from 5.19% to 6.08% students from Muslim Community, which is even more than the Scheduled Caste and Tribes or Other Backward Classes. Since Muslim population is at its peak, that has even led to a significant rise in communal violence, which had the last records as per 2011 records being 15-20 riots. Howrah City, best known for its Hooghly river, alone has registered 60 cases of rioting in just 18 months, earlier it had count of 36 in 2021, 23 in 2022. Therefore, due to heightened precarity and proletarization, Muslims have somewhere been a reason for the loss of lives, though they too are at risk, especially during the election violence.
HIGHLIGHTS
- TMC Chairperson and leader, Mamata Banerjee had appealed to voters in Malda district, where Muslims compring is 51.27% to vote for her party, since she has never won district’s vote ever in Lok Sabha.
- She accused Union Minister, Amit Shah for accusing her and her party and also misusing central funds in his campaign speeches in the state. “You want to throw stones at Bengal but first you must see your own face in the mirror”.
- As she refuted BJP's allegations on how Hindus are being targeted in Bengal by saying, “Muslims and Hindus live together. We don’t have riots. We want to live in peace and harmony…. We share everything among ourselves like brothers.”

- Just by giving Adhar card facilities or support of illegal incidents one cannot understand till when the Muslims are by her side. Since Muslims are united always one mistake of Didi will lead her in ruckus and loss of party once again.
