Elections have always been a big part of our democratic country. It is the base of our democracy. India has always been fair when it comes to elections. From conducting proper election booths to putting limits on electoral bonds, elections in India have always been transparent and fair to the people of India. Now we all know how much Artificial Intelligence has affected all the spheres of our lives. And not to be surprised, it might affect elections too. Recently OpenAI has decided to combat misinformation during elections as well.

But there is more to come. With the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in India, some people have been going overboard in the sense that China may interfere through some AI-generated information. The recent alert given by Microsoft has shown us how “artificial intelligence” is being used by China to manipulate public opinion. The chances of taking hold of the democratic processes in India, the United States, and South Korea are becoming higher with each passing day.

Understanding the Threat: AI in Elections and Maintenance

AI technology introduced into elections can be problematic because it is fast becoming part of the modern election process. China's experiment during Taiwan's presidential election is simply an illustration of the significance of AI-created content for electoral prognosis. In sum, the plausibility that AI-generated content poses a risk to democracy emphasizes the need for responsible and ethical AI development and deployment. By spreading lies on social media platforms and inventing violations via social media platforms, state-supported cyber groups try to manipulate public opinion and achieve geopolitical goals.

China's Strategic Intentions

As uncovered by the Microsoft intelligence team, the plan of China to interfere in the elections of several countries namely; India, the United States, South Korea and others, is one prominent threat intelligence. The use of AI-driven content, such as deepfakes and inauthentic news, is supposed to be at the center of China’s strategy to assure the voters’ sentiment and manipulate the election results to their outcome.

The Risks of AI Manipulation: Democracy Perils

The spread of AI-themed content is multi-pronged to national practices, among them posing the false information and the manipulation of public discourse. Through the wrong use of social media platforms and the deliberate inclusion of AI technology, the malicious elements can do away with the credibility of their elections and, thus, diminish public trust in democratic institutions. Further, the distribution of AI-based materials can introduce fragmentation and enhance the existing conflict in the community.

Lessons from Taiwan: Implications for Global Security

The public election in Taiwan this year was polluted by implanting AI-generated memes, forged audio endorsements and false stories namely that from state-run cyber groups like Storm 1376 that tarnish certain candidates’ names and shape voters’ opinions. The involvement of AI-generated TV news anchors in the disinformation campaign represented a new frontier in cyber threat terrain that constantly evolves as we turn increasingly digital. China's attempts at implementing AI technology bring the need for more extensive attention and practical solutions to secure the process of an election.

The Global Impact: Incremental Stress

The danger of AI misuse transcends national borders, as it constitutes one of the main global threats to democratic governance and electoral integrity in face of elections. The AI-created material is making the election processes of many countries in the world very disruptive. From the USA to KOR, countries around the world are battling with this. While China extends its efforts of global election domination, international attention is needed urgently, together tackling the problem and maintaining the democratic principles that form the basis of our countries.

Protecting India's Democratic Values: Ways Ahead

As India prepares for the Lok Sabha elections, it becomes extremely important for everyone’s active participation in anti-foreign interference and countering fake information. Already, Election Commission of India (ECI) has made interventions against the spread of false information and fake allegations. But how to react to the risk of AI falsifying anything, is worth considering to implement more active measures.

Through the promotion of media literacy, improved cybersecurity measures, and transparency recreations of the electoral system, India can preserve its democratic values and guarantee free and fair elections for all citizens.

As of today, safeguarding democracy in the digital age remains to be the most urgent problem. Making AI-made-up content for elections is strictly prohibited again as it goes against democratic order and electoral fairness. The factor that makes China use AI technologies for expansionism is a potential threat to countries around the world.

Hence, all the countries have to monitor the situation and take the action to fight the danger. Through more advanced cybersecurity measures, media literacy promotion, and the establishment of international cooperation we can protect democracy online and ensure that democracy is upheld in the free, fair, and transparent manner in electoral processes.
