Transformation of Indian Railways before 2014 to 2024

Playing text to speech

The past ten years have seen a tremendous transformation of Indian Railways that was ignited by a row of amazing programs under the leadership of the present Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The railway sector in particular has undergone profound and revolutionary reforms ranging from upgrading infrastructure to the introduction of advanced technologies in the quest to optimize operations, safety, and passenger comfort. Let us check up on the exciting story of the Indian Railways since 2014 to 2024 and where the journey took the nation's railway network to.

Electrification of Railway Tracks:

One of the key points of the transformation of Indian Railways has been the electrification of railway tracks, the purpose of which is the integration of environment friendly and low-energy transports. The Modi government, a champion of sustainability, has hugely driven the movement, and indeed, there is no doubt that it has significantly made progress over the past nine years.

India has reached another milestone after March 2023, several states and union territories are now completely covered by rail electrification. This is an important step towards a bright future with a clean railway for India. The shift from diesel to electric traction not only contributes to the carbon reduction of rail operations by itself but it also helps in the improvement of energy security because it reduces the dependency on the petroleum-based energy imports.

Expansion of Railway Network:

Ever since Modi's government took power, there has been a focused effort to improve the railway network especially in the Northeast of India a region that is economically backward. Rails, which will cross the geographical divides and connect the locations that are shunned to the mainstream net have been assigned a priority by the authorities. These are the pillar stones of financial growth and social development concepts. As the Balipara-Bhalukpong, an Arunachal Pradesh rail link, and the Rangia-Murkongselek, an Assam rail link, were completed, there was not only the prospect of better mobility for the residents of these regions but also the emergence of new goods and services for business and the tourism industry.

Doubling of Railway Tracks:

The trend towards more items and passengers with time is likely to lead to an issue that cannot be ignored which is more space for capacity, for more people to be served. One of the crucial figures of the Modi administration is allocating huge amount of funds to be put in tuning those railways that link places and boost the number of trains passing.

Since rail transport is often safer than other means of transport, its performance in safety can also be boosted by discouraging common causes of railway line blockage, derailments and collisions such as causing collision on rails. The acceptance of the Rs 30,749 cr budget for doubling the rail lines in 2023-24 has definitely highlighted the will of the government to bring a transformation in the infrastructure and to provide a safe and smooth ride for passengers across the length and breadth of the nation.

Upgradation of Railway Stations and Trains:

By the time the ambitious redevelopment of over 400 stations was completed, each of them was equipped with cutting-edge facilities and amenities, as a result, the journeys of millions of passengers have been made more fun and comfy. The birth of Shatabdi-type semi high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express has changed the conventional travel pattern, giving passengers a safe and fast mode of transport.

Equipped with different facilities like Wi-Fi, GPS, vacuum bio-toilets, and surveillance through CCTV, these trains symbolize the government's dedication to improving passenger's travel comfort and security. On the other hand, projects such as Gatiman Express which recently became India's first semi-high-speed train play such a role as well. Indian Railways is about to move forward a new stage of development.

Introduction of Innovative Technologies:

The innovation in Indian Railways has always been in the axis of modernization, with the application of the latest technologies for enhancing the safety, efficiency, and the confidence of the customers. Electric signal systems have been widely applied to improve train capacity and safety on the railways, by eliminating the need for the person as well as reducing the accidents and improving train movement efficiency. Launching the UTS Mobile Ticketing App has changed ticketing procedures and now passengers can purchase online tickets without having to line up at ticket offices.

Focus on Safety and Sustainability

Taking safety as its top priority, Indian Railways has been working to upgrade infrastructure and make the railway safe across the system. Instead of normal coaches, modern LHB types of coaches are being introduced which have offered highly enhanced safety to passengers by including features like anti-climbing arrangements, secondary air suspension and corrosion-resistant shells.

Moreover, the removal of level crossings unguarded by personnel has greatly improved journey safety of passengers and reduced the train accident risk. The government's commitment to sustainability is visible, considering there are the plans to provide hydrogen railways with a mission to bring down emissions and conservation of the environment.

Redevelopment of Railway Stations:

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, meant for 508 stations across India, is a bigger initiative that will work towards giving stations a complete makeover ending with state-of-the-art facilities for both passengers and service providers alike. Indian Railways is continuously improving the infrastructure and include such conveniences as complimentary WIFI services at more than 6,000 stations, thereby making the whole journey more comfortable and satisfying. And this serves the purpose of fulfilling the travelers’ needs.

Conclusion:

While India undergoes progression towards being a modernized nation, Indian Railways will always be a connecting backbone that enables the people, fuels economic growth and facilitates social development in every part of the nation. Through actions like electrification, extension, doubling the lines, station rehabilitation as well as adoption of modern technologies, this era of rail commuting looks brighter, introducing safer traveling option, more vehicle carrier capacity and sustainable rail the system for all to travel in.
