Iran launched missiles on Pakistani territory late Tuesday, one day after bombing Iraq and Syria. Iranian state media reported that the "missile and drone" operation damaged two bases of the Baluchi jihadist group Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan. But why did Iran attack Pakistan?

"The so-called Jaish al-Adl group, which is an Iranian terrorist group, was targeted," Abdollahian told ANI on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. 

Notably, Iran has fought extremists along its borders, but a missile and drone attack on Pakistan would be unique for Iran.

Why did Iran attack Pakistan?

Iran may have launched the assault in retaliation. Jaish al-Adl has previously carried out strikes on Iranian security troops near the Pakistani border. 

On Wednesday, Iranian Minister Abdollahain said, "The corporation has taken shelter in numerous regions of Pakistan's Balochistan province. This institution killed our safety personnel. We totally focused Iranian terrorist businesses on Pakistani soil.

On July 23, last year, four Iranian law enforcement officials were killed while on patrol near the border in an assault claimed by the Jaish al-Adl. 

According to reports, Tehran and Islamabad have frequently accused each other of aiding extremists to launch moves from their personal territories. However, legitimate forces from both aspects rarely engage.

Meanwhile, Tehran has frequently warned that the Jaish al-Adl militant group is utilizing Pakistani turf in the border town of Panjgur, Balochistan, to launch terror strikes on Iranian security forces, according to PTI.

Are Iran Goals the same?

Iran and its proxies share the goal of halting Israel's shelling of Gaza and forcing US soldiers out of the region for good.

Aside from that, they have their own local interests.

Hezbollah is Lebanon's most powerful group, presiding over an economy in freefall. It tries to avoid further escalation of the crisis or Israel's extensive military intervention, which might undermine its domestic position.

According to commentators, the Houthis want to keep control of Yemen and have utilized the current conflict to demonstrate their military power and regional influence. Iran's actual level of authority over Houthi actions is debatable.

Could Russia be involved in the conflict?

Russia and Iran have grown closer in recent years, united by their worldwide isolation under US sanctions and hostility to America's global supremacy. Iran helps Moscow with drones for its attacks on Ukrainian cities. Both countries acted in Syria to help their mutual ally, President Assad.

Russia has expressed concern about the Iran-Pakistan conflict, urging Tehran and Islamabad to resolve their disputes through diplomacy.

COULD THE SITUATION BE WORSE FURTHER?

Western and regional officials and analysts generally believe that Iran intends to avoid a direct military conflict with the United States or Israel, but is willing to deploy proxies to keep both countries' troops occupied in the region.

War causes long-term physical and psychological trauma to children and adults, as well as a decline in material and human resources. War-related deaths are only the "tip of the iceberg". Aside from death, there is little documentation of other impacts. They include endemic poverty, malnutrition, infirmity, economic/social deterioration, and mental disorders, to name a few. Coherent and successful solutions for coping with disputes and the plethora of mental health disorders that arise as a result can only be established with a better understanding of these issues.
