On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, Yamraj made a promise to Yamuna that those who immerse themselves in the sacred waters of the Yamuna will be exempt from going to Yamlok after death and instead find salvation. Yamunotri Temple, located at an elevation of 3164 meters above sea level, consecrates numerous devotees who embark on this sacred journey.

The shrine serves as the sacred abode of Goddess Yamuna and is the originating point of the Yamuna River. This pilgrimage site in Garhwal holds the title of being the furthest west. The temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and the sacred thermal springs of Janki Chatti are the main highlights of this place. The atmosphere is cleansed by the cool waves of the Yamuna River. The thermal springs, known as Kunds, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess 'Shakti', continue to keep the surroundings warm.
