In my opinion, the CCP never abandoned socialism/communism.

Capitalist reform is just a shortcut the CCP has decided to reach socialism faster. However, the socialism that the Chinese Communist Party aims for is not what Marx advocated. 

We call this socialism with Chinese characteristics

So what is this “socialism with Chinese characteristics”?

To be honest, I don't know, and I don't think anyone really knows. So one of Mr. Xi's tasks is to define what that is.
