Why Working From Home Doesn't Work for Many Employees

In order to cope with the global crisis, everyone needed to make a few adjustments. One is when businesses adopt a work-from-home culture and come to terms with the advantages and disadvantages of doing so.

Employees have been raving about the numerous advantages of working from home, including the ability to work remotely, independently, and on their own schedules, since the switch. However, when we try to consider the bigger picture, working from home still has quite a few drawbacks. There are benefits and drawbacks to everything on the planet. The option to work from home is no different.

Here I am coming down with the list of critical factors through which employees are not familiar with work from home surroundings:

Lack of motivation- External motivation can come from a variety of different sources, including working in an environment with other workers who share a common objective or getting a boost from a supervisor. Working from home, on the other hand, lacks that kind of environment.

An employee's life can be difficult and their productivity can suffer as a result of a lack of motivation. Although self-motivation is effective to some extent, it is not always sufficient to motivate a man to continue. The application of external motivation comes into play here.

Frequent breaks and monitoring issue- It can be hard to work alone. The position requires employees to monitor their own work performance. Self-regulation is a difficult job for which employees must choose.

When breaks and work are not monitored, employees may frequently laze around and take frequent breaks, resulting in longer work hours.

Security and lack of official arrangements- Workers who work from home have embraced the change from a crowded office to a quiet and inviting home office. A home office, like everything else, has its drawbacks as well.

It can be expensive to set up a home office with a high-end laptop or desktop, a fast internet connection, and other equipment like printers or fax machines. And not everyone will find that to be very convenient.

Lack of positive environment and distractions around surroundings- A good work-life balance is a benefit of working from home. Workers believe that working from home gives them more time to spend with their families and other important life events. However, there is more to the story.

To achieve the desired outcomes, employees must maintain their concentration throughout their workday. It turns out to be extremely difficult to avoid being distracted by family members seeking attention or other sounds from the house. In contrast to an office space, not every household can provide conducive working conditions.

Lack of productivity- It is claimed that working from home boosts productivity. However, with all of the enticing distractions:

  • Midday naps, 
  • Cliffhanger-free web series, 
  • Spending time with family

These activities makes it hard to focus and stay interested in work for a long time. Also, working from home can make you feel lonely and make it hard to be productive at work.

My final viewpoint

In my opinion, the opposite side always has greener grass. In this world, there is no flawless system. We must make the most of everything, which has advantages and disadvantages of its own. Some workers are content to work from home, while others are eager to return to their workplace, reclaim their cherished office chairs, and meet their coworkers.

Some businesses are still resistant to the idea of remote work because of the drawbacks that have been identified, and the concern is legitimate. However, there are a variety of approaches to employee engagement that can assist businesses in overcoming these drawbacks.
