Unsettling video from Afghanistan has surfaced showing a Taliban official hitting female students who were protesting their right to an education after being turned away from a university because they were not wearing burqas. Despite the hijab the girls were donning. On Sunday, the event happened at the entrances to Badakhshan University in northeastern Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has turned into the greatest nightmare for women since the Taliban took charge. Women now face limitations on their ability to work and attend school. Mandatory burqa is very strict. Girls beyond the age of eight should avoid men unless they are a close blood relative, a husband, or an in-law. Nail polish and makeup are not permitted. Most often, breaking the law is punished by being publicly stoned to death, given the death penalty, or being tortured in jail. Imagine that these ladies are sold to males of any age and have no control over their appearance or careers.

Taliban claims to adhere to sharia, which is a code of conduct outlined in the Quran. But do these books have the same level of animosity for women?

Even if we stop discussing Afghanistan, consider other Islamic nations and the status of women there. Princesses are among the women fleeing Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The daughter of UAE Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum ran away in 2002, but she was apprehended and was never seen again. In 2018, his other daughter fled the house while somehow releasing a terrible video about her predicament and parental rights. Later in 2019, his sixth wife fled to London with her two kids and filed for divorce. He allegedly about to wed their then-11-year-old daughter to the then-33-year-old Saudi crown prince, and it was reported in one of the reports that she was frequently threatened.

The same thing happened to the Saudi royal family. They too have kept captured princesses.

Nowadays, Muslims frequently discuss how Islam grants women the best rights. So why are so many women under sharia law oppressed?

They lead the most miserable lives, but it is claimed that this is best for them. Covering oneself is pleasing to God. Indian Muslim women fight for the hijab while being slaughtered and tortured in Iran for not wearing it. Women in Saudi Arabia were imprisoned and raped until the mandotry burqa ban was overturned.
