Playing text to speech

On Tuesday, Draupadi Murmu was named as the NDA's presidential candidate by the Bharatiya Janata Party. After the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, JP Nadda, the party's president, made the announcement.

“For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We announce Draupadi Murmu as NDA's candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections,” Nadda remarked.

Draupadi Murmu, a politician from India and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was born on June 20, 1958. She is the official presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance, which is led by the BJP. She will face joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the upcoming elections. From 2015 until 2021, she held the position of ninth Governor of Jharkhand. She hails from the Odisha state. She is also the first member of a scheduled tribe to be nominated for the position of President of India. She is the first governor of Jharkhand to finish a five-year tenure.

Murmu, an ethnic Santhal, was born in the village of Baidaposi in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. According to accounts, the local headmen under the Panchayati Raj System were her father, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, and grandfather.

Numerous firsts can be attributed to Draupadi Murmu. She became the first tribal woman to be selected as a contender for India's highest constitutional office when the BJP-led NDA nominated her on Tuesday as its presidential nominee for the forthcoming elections on July 18.

She was the first woman to assume the role of governor of Jharkhand when she was appointed in 2015. She also made history by being the first indigenous woman to lead her own state of Odisha.

Given that the odds are in the NDA's favour, she might very well be on her way to achieving another first if she is elected president.

Murmu is a seasoned tribal leader from the Santal ethnic group, whereas the NDA appears to have made a significant political statement by choosing to concentrate on tribal areas. In addition to being present in Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal, the Santals are the biggest tribe in Jharkhand.

In 1997, Murmu won a seat on the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat council. She was also the Bharathiya Janata Party Scheduled Tribes Morcha's national vice president.

She served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004, and for Commerce and Transport from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, during the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal coalition administration in Odisha. She served as a former minister for Odisha and as an assembly member for Rairangpur in 2000 and 2004. In 2007, the Odisha Legislative Assembly gave her the Nilkantha Award for being the greatest MLA.

On July 18, there will be presidential elections, and on July 21, there may be a need for a vote count. June 29 has been chosen as the final day for nominations. By July 25, the next president must be sworn in. The term of President Ram Nath Kovind expires on July 24.

According to a PTI comment from Murmu, 'I am startled as well as thrilled. I had never considered running for the top position as a tribal lady from the isolated Mayurbhanj area.
