INSIDE STORY: TAIWAN'S ELECTIONS

Playing text to speech

''Taiwan' this tiny little state in East Asia held a presidential election last week, yes there would be a question what's the deal if Taiwan had an election and even who cares?? But the people who know about this small urbanized territory in the region in deep would know that 'Taiwan Matters'- from Hong Kong to Washington Taiwan election is the talk of the town but for the mainlanders in the Bejing- Taiwan election result is the massive disappointment or a kind of partial defeat.

To break in simple In Taiwan, the outsider's influence becomes the factor and determines the winner and this election carried the tradition, where Hong Kong anti- Chinese Protest, Xi Jinping bully attitude and the wave of pro-western and democratic society values coming from the United States contributed in the winning of much independent and incumbent President 'Tsai Ing-Wing' of ruling party 'Democratic Prosssgive Party (DDP)' and mark the defect much pro-Chinese 'Han Kuo-yu' and his party 'Kuomintang '(KMT)

INSIDE STORY TAIWAN S ELECTIONS

Ms. Tsai won with a record majority, ever since the presidential election started, she got 8.2 votes equal to a total of 57% of the vote in comparison to her opponent Han Kuo-yu who just received 38% of vote share and delivers a landslide victory. To make the contest more interesting this massive victory was not predicted just an year before the election largely due to Ms.Tsai and her party downcast performance in the local Municipality elections past year, the defeat was such shameful that it forced Ms.Tsai to resigned from the position of chairwomen in her DDP party, Ms. Tsai career was almost ruined. This disappointed in the local election was the result of the flagging economy and policies that turned unpopular sentiment among voters and this displayed in the opinion polls where Han Kuo-yu was leading over Ms.Tsai with 30 percentage points.

Ms.Tsai in her tenure had done work much in the areas of pension and labor reforms. She proved to be 'socially progressive' in the policies when she passed a law that legalizes- same-sex marriage. In opposite, Mr.Han promised to revive the failing economy by keeping Taiwan close with the government in Mainland China and focused on the promised like a flow of capital and strengthing tourism industry and other benefits. The fierce and close election battle was expected but something happened and things changed the mood of Taiwan. You guess it right, it was Hong Kong mood that reached in Taipei.

Ms.Tsai should thanks student of Hong Kong for her victory because since the popular outbreak started on the streets of Hong Kong, there is surprise rising in her party status, the voters started to move away from her pro-Chinese opponent and she gained the support, since the protest every opinion poll showed her rise.

The reason for rejecting the pro-Chinese Candidate was the afterward effect of 'China's miss conduct in Hong Kong 'that triggered the sense of fear and anger against china's establishment. People of Taiwan worried about their democracy and national security from the Chinese influence. The China's 'One Country 2 system' is failing in Hong Kong where people of Hong Kong just wants 'greater democracy and freedom 'from Mainland, now this trend of much pro greater freedom is coming among Taiwan people too, especially after China's President Xi Jinping showed the intent in his speeches about bringing Taiwan under this 'One Country two 2 system' this makes Twainese anxious. In Taiwan only 4% of the people in support of uniting with China, even traditional Han community too stood against any kind of 'unification'

Ms. Tsai very well used this anti-Bejning sentiment and supported the Hong Kong Protest and gained the hearts of the young Twainese population.

This anti- China trend from Hong Kong to Taiwan just shocked the other parties and completely shifted the election resulted in favor of DDP.

The one more favorable factor that played its part in the election was the US building its relations with Taiwan the credit goes to 'Donald Trump ' for his Pro-Taiwan stand. He broke the old American policy of 'non-engagement' with Taiwan and opened the room of proper dialogue. He proves to be most pro-Taiwan American President after Richard Nixon. Trump administration came up with the 'Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019' approved by Congress and Trump also agreed more arms sales and allowed the passage of American warships to the 'Taiwan Strait' the US is now favorite among young Twainese people

The Taiwan election result is a big development in the changing relations and power dynamics where the US is more interfering and influencing the uprising and protest in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the US is most active now in the region than ever. For China, these are not good days to count- its 'One Country Two System' policy and failed and rejected by both the people of Hong Kong and Taiwan, already seeing a slowdown in the economy due to trade war with the US and possible Trade deal with the United States already cleared its the China who will ask to do many sacrifices in the deal. Lastly, for the people of Hong Kong and Taiwan, these changing dynamics are showing the light of greater freedom and democracy in the coming future, it's clear from their resistance they just too different from Mainlanders and don't find themselves fit the current structure. Even they are part of this East Asian region in the shed of China, yet they remain the model of ideal pro-western democracy and can't be a part of China's dream.
