By Anjita D.

On January 1, 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan, causing significant damage and triggering tsunami warnings.

The tremors were widespread across Japan, with their peak located on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture.

The JMA issued a tsunami warning, its first since the 2011 earthquake, but later reduced it to an advisory, urging locals to remain vigilant.

Tens of thousands of households lost power due to collapsed structures, fires, and tsunami waves up to one meter in size.

Japan has ordered 100,000 residents to evacuate following a disaster resulting in one confirmed death and dozens injured.
