Chronic Wasting disease (CWD), often known as "zombie deer disease," is a prion disease that affects deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer, and moose.
Prions are proteins that have misfolded and cause gradual neurological degeneration in the brain and nervous system.
It was discovered in 1967 in Colorado, and has since spread to 28 states & 3 Canadian provinces via bodily fluids like urine, saliva & carcass remains
Its symptoms include weight loss, tremors, drooling, and fearlessness. Infected animals can approach humans, and no cure or vaccine exists.
CWD has no cure or vaccine, and human transmission has not been proven. Officials warn against eating venison from potentially diseased animals.
