Why do hiccups come suddenly?

By MindStick

Hiccups come suddenly due to sudden vocal cord contractions caused by an involuntary diaphragm contraction that separates chest & abdominal cavities.

One theory suggested, the contractions could be caused by irritation of the phrenic nerve, which regulates the diaphragm.

Another possible theory could be triggered by an imbalance between the brain's messages to the diaphragm and the diaphragm's actual impulses.

It can be triggered by various factors like excessive eating, drinking, smoking, sudden temperature changes or excessive air intake.

It is usually harmless and disappears within minutes, however, If it persists for over 48 hours, advised to consult a doctor.
