Seaweed agriculture, a new and rising sector in India, has the potential to considerably contribute to the agricultural economy of the country.
Long Indian coastline environment has the potential to generate 9.7 million tonnes of seaweed annually, but actual production is only 34,000 tonnes.
In 2022, the Indian government announced a Rs 640 crore package to boost seaweed agriculture cultivating up to 1.12 million tonnes by 2025.
Gaining popularity for its nutritional value, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, natural fertilizer, biofuel potential, production of agar-agar and alginates.
It also offers advantages over traditional methods like non-land or fresh water requirements, coastal growth, fast growth & multiple harvests per year
