Alessandro Volta invented the first battery in 1800, voltaic pile, made of zinc & copper discs separated by brine-soaked cloth or cardboard layers.
The circuit consisted of zinc & copper discs arranged vertically in a pile, connected by a wire to both ends.
It was the first practical source of continuous electricity, used to power early electrical devices like lamps, motors & telegraph machines.
Early 1800s, William Cruickshank invention of the trough battery revolutionised early electrical experiments by making it more efficient & compact.
Voltaic piles were primary source of electricity until 1836, invention of Daniell cell's efficiency & durability replaced them for most applications.
