Why does Assam celebrate Kati bihu?

Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, is celebrated in Assam to mark the end of the sowing season and the start of the harvesting season.

It is one of three important Bihu celebrations held in Assam, all of which are related to agriculture.

It is celebrated on the first day of the Kati month Assamese calendar: farmers shifting rice seedlings, cleaning fields & preparing for harvest.

It is a sombre festival that expresses thanks to God and nature for the land's bounties and the approaching crop.

Follows traditional rituals: offering prayers, lighting oil lamps, eating simple meals, visiting relatives, singing & dancing to traditional Bihu song
