After the whale shark, the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second-largest living shark and fish.

Basking Shark is a filter feeder, which feeds on microscopic organisms known as zooplankton.

They have wide, gaping mouths and lengthy gill slits that can be up to 6 feet wide and can filter up to 3,000 tonnes of water per hour.

They can reach 30 feet in length and weigh up to ten tonnes.

Due to overfishing and habitat destruction, they are currently classed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
