A silkworm is the caterpillar (or larva) of a silk moth.
Silkworms have been domesticated and bred for thousands of years for silk manufacturing, and they are no longer found in the wild.
They have four life stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (cocoon), and adult moth.
Sutures and surgical dressings are also made from silk.
Up to 900 metres of silk thread can be found in a single silkworm cocoon.
