The McMahon Line is an 890 km-long border line that extends from Bhutan in the west to the region where India, China, and Myanmar meet in the east.
The McMahon Line was drawn by Henry McMahon in 1914 as part of a treaty between the British Raj and Tibet.
China rejected the McMahon Line and did not recognise it as the official boundary between the two countries.
The McMahon Line became a disputed border after India gained independence from Britain in 1947, and China became a communist state in 1949.
In 1962, China launched a surprise attack on India along the McMahon Line, resulting in a brief but bitter conflict known as the Sino-Indian War.
The McMahon Line continues to be a contentious issue between India and China, with both sides claiming sovereignty over parts of the border region.
