On November 3, 2023, a powerful earthquake  hit Jajarkot, Nepal, resulting in the collapse of numerous houses and casualties of over 128 individuals, while causing tremors that extended as far as New Delhi, India.

The earthquake took place at 11:47 p.m. According to Nepal's National Seismological Centre, a strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck on Friday. paraphrase: The earthquake, initially assigned a magnitude of 6.2, was later revised by the German Research Centre  for Geosciences to a magnitude of 5.7, while the United States while the Geological Survey recorded a measurement of 5.6.

This recent earthquake has been the most fatal since 2015, claiming the lives of approximately 9,000 individuals during the prior two earthquakes that occurred in Nepal. Entire communities, temples dating back centuries, and other significant landmarks were completely devastated, leading to the destruction of over a million homes and causing an economic loss  of $6 billion.

Officials were concerned that the number of casualties from the earthquake on Friday may increase due to their inability to communicate with the mountainous region near the epicenter  , located approximately 500 km (300 miles) to the west of the capital Kathmandu, where people also felt the tremors. The region consists of remote hills and is populated by approximately 190,000 individuals residing in scattered villages.

The potential number of injured individuals may be in the hundreds, and there is also the possibility of additional fatalities.

According to police spokesperson Kuber Kadayat, a total of 92 individuals lost their lives in Jajarkot, while another 36 fatalities occurred in the nearby Rukum West district, both situated within the Karnali province. The village of Ramidanda was identified as the epicentre.

According to an official from the prime minister's office, Rukum West witnessed injuries to around 85 individuals, while Jajarkot reported approximately 55 casualties. Additionally, Sharma revealed that exclusively in Jajarkot, at least 50 individuals were receiving medical treatment.

Rescue helicopters were dispatched to the area for assistance, while ground security forces carried out the task of extracting the injured and deceased individuals from the debris.

Soldiers were working to remove obstacles caused by landslides following the earthquake, ensuring the reopening of roads and mountain paths. Medical workers  and medications were transported to hospitals in helicopters.

President Ramchandra Paudel has conveyed his sorrow regarding the casualties and destruction caused by the earthquake.

The President has urged the government and all relevant parties to prioritize efficient rescue and relief efforts in the areas impacted by the earthquake, as per the Office of the President.

According to officials, the rescue and relief efforts at the scene have been impeded due to blocked roads and damaged bridges.

Nepal experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location on the convergence point of the Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates. These plates gradually move towards each other, creating pressure that is relieved through seismic activity.

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on October 22.

On October 3, Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, experienced a seismic event with a magnitude measuring 3.

Bharat Koirala, a senior seismologist from the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre in Nepal, suggests that there has been a prolonged subterranean collision between the Indian and Tibetan plates, resulting in the buildup of significant energy.

Primarily, the region of western Nepal is facing a significant risk of more severe earthquakes.
