Megxit: The Other Side

Playing text to speech

The news about their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, more popularly known as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has been the talk of the town ever since they announced that they will be stepping back as 'senior royals' and would instead split their time between North America and UK on Instagram. Quite predictably, this news has not gone down well with many, if not most, of the people.

Meghan, who played a major character in the hit show, 'Suits', was initially described as a breath of fresh air when her engagement to Prince Harry was announced.

However, in the time leading up to the wedding, and more evidently soon after, the tide turned on her. British tabloids have been excruciatingly cruel in their coverage about the former actress.

Megxit The Other Side

The Duchess has been receiving tons of hate after the announcement of their exit from the royal family was made, which has been dubbed as 'megxit' and her sympathisers have been few.

Many argue that Meghan brought the criticism on herself due to her 'unreasonable demands' and her 'manipulative and narcissistic personality', seemingly forgetting that they have perhaps never met her.

Some others argue that even the Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Catherine, was also subjected to similar treatment by the press and that Meghan should have endured it.

However, it is quite exceedingly clear if one brushes through the media coverage that Meghan has had to put up with far more scrutiny and negative press than Catherine ever did, despite being the spouse of a future king.

Furthermore, Meghan has been criticised for the very things that Catherine was praised for. There are dozens of examples exposing the British tabloids' double standards.

One of the first criticisms levied at Meghan was her supposed 'disrespect' towards the Queen when she requested that the venue of Wedding, the St Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle, be scented but was refused.

However, a request of similar nature made by the Duchess of Cambridge was covered by the press positively, albeit quite briefly.

Megxit The Other Side

The Duchess of Sussex has seen disapproval for even the most innocuous of acts. One particularly inane headlines that very clearly shows the tabloids' bias against Meghan was about something as harmless as an avocado.

As absurd as it may seem, both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex were mentioned in the same sentence as an avocado, which was the headline, no less.

The article about Catherine focused on the issues she faced during pregnancy and how she was gifted an avocado to help with her morning sickness.

This may seem uninteresting at it its worst. However, the article about Meghan described how avocados were responsible for deforestation.

While it's not possible to be entirely sure whether all of these negativity the Duchess of Sussex has been subjected to is based on racial bias or if the media simply found a new sacrificial lamb and decided to leave the Duchess of Cambridge alone. However, their treatment of the newest member of the Royal Family was appalling to say the least and the media should, at least now, try to be more supportive of the Sussexes as the navigate through uncharted waters now.
