# Flamingo, truck, helicopter, taxi: which one doesn't belong?

Look at the screenshot above. A flamingo, a truck, a helicopter and a taxi. Which one doesn't belong?

Most children will point at the flamingo within a second or two. Now ask them why, and listen carefully. "Because the others are vehicles." "Because the flamingo is alive." "Because the others carry people." Every one of those is a small piece of reasoning, and that "why" is what this kind of game really trains.

## The Think & Remember section

[Odd One Out](https://www.mindstick.com/kidszone/play/odd-one-out?from=think-remember) is the first game in [Think & Remember](https://www.mindstick.com/kidszone/groups/think-remember), the KidsZone section built around noticing, reasoning and remembering. It has nineteen games, and many of them look like the questions children later meet in reasoning tests and olympiads.

The rules of Odd One Out are simple. Four pictures appear. Three go together, one doesn't. Your child taps the one that doesn't belong. **Start over** gives a new set, and **Hint** helps if they're stuck.

## Three levels

- **Colour and shape**: the odd one is different in how it looks, a good start for four-year-olds
- **Groups**: the odd one belongs to a different category, like the flamingo among vehicles
- **Even and odd**: number-based sets, where the odd one out might literally be an odd number

The move from "looks different" to "belongs to a different group" is a real step up in thinking. Children have to stop looking at surface features and start thinking about what things are.

## Two more pattern games

[What Comes Next](https://www.mindstick.com/kidszone/play/patterns?from=think-remember) is about patterns. Red, blue, red, blue... what's next? Spotting a pattern and continuing it is a skill children use everywhere, from maths to music to reading.

[What Fits?](https://www.mindstick.com/kidszone/play/matrix?from=think-remember) is a step up again, closer to the grid puzzles in reasoning tests. Good for children who find the first two too easy.

## The one rule I'd add

When your child gets an answer right, ask them to explain it. Saying the reason out loud is half the learning. And sometimes they'll surprise you with a reason you didn't think of. If a child says the taxi is the odd one out because it's the only yellow thing, they're not wrong, they're just using a different rule. Talk about it. That's how flexible thinking grows.

## Off the screen

You can play this anywhere. At dinner, name four things: "spoon, fork, plate, banana". Ask which doesn't belong and why. Then let your child make one up for you. Children love being the question-setter, and making a good puzzle is even harder than solving one.

If your child is preparing for a school olympiad or a reasoning test, Odd One Out is a gentle way to warm up. The questions are friendlier than exam papers, but the thinking is the same, and a relaxed child solves more than a tense one.
