# Not Every AI Prompt Needs to Leave Your Device

As Claude, GPT and Astra-style assistants become more capable, it is tempting to treat the biggest cloud model as the answer to every task. I think that gets the balance wrong. Some requests need a frontier model; plenty do not need to leave your device at all.

Summarizing a personal note, sorting a short list, or rewriting a rough sentence is different from asking an AI to reason across a large set of documents. For small, routine jobs, **[on-device AI](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/34540/ai)** can offer a useful mix of speed, **offline access** and less data sent elsewhere. For harder work, **[cloud AI](https://answers.mindstick.com/blog/86/how-do-cloud-ai-services-work)** may be worth the extra capability.

This should be a choice users can see and understand, not a hidden technical setting. Let me keep **private notes** on my device, then deliberately send a document to a stronger model when I need help with it. That is a more sensible default than quietly routing every prompt through a remote service.

Local processing is not a magic privacy guarantee: apps still need clear policies, and a device can be compromised too. But it gives people another option and makes questions about **[data retention](https://www.mindstick.com/news/4848/anthropic-changes-data-retention-policy-after-pushback-from-enterprise-customers)** easier to reason about. The best AI setup may not be one model doing everything; it may be a small local tool for everyday tasks and a cloud model when the task genuinely calls for one.
