# The AI Race May Be Won by the Assistant You Already Have

There’s a lot of attention on which [AI model](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/86452/spains-first-human-ai-model-aitana-makes-more-than-10000-euros-in-a-month) is smartest. Claude, GPT, and Google’s Gemini all give people reasons to switch between apps and test the latest release. But for many users, the decisive question may be less exciting: which assistant is already built into the device or service they use every day?

A capable model is only a tap away in a dedicated chatbot. A genuinely useful assistant might instead be available while you’re writing an email, looking at a photo, or asking your phone to find something you saw last week. Projects such as Google’s Project Astra point toward that more integrated style of interaction, where AI can work with what’s on screen or in the surrounding environment.

That kind of access is a distribution advantage, not necessarily proof of a better model. A company that controls a phone operating system, browser, or productivity suite can put its assistant in front of millions of people without asking them to download another app or learn a new interface. Once an assistant becomes the [default assistant](https://www.mindstick.com/news/3790/microsoft-copilot-can-be-set-as-default-assistant-app-on-android), convenience can outweigh small differences in answer quality.

This creates a tension for users. Integration can save steps, but it can also make switching harder and encourage people to stay inside one company’s ecosystem. I’d like to see these features remain easy to disable, and for users to have a clear choice of AI model rather than being quietly locked into whichever one came preinstalled.

Model quality still matters. But the next stage of competition may be decided just as much by where AI appears, what it can access, and whether people feel free to choose something else.
