# James Webb Space Telescope detects changes in Chariklo rings

Astronomers using the [**James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)**](https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/) have discovered that the unusual rings surrounding Chariklo, a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, have changed significantly over just a few years. The finding provides new evidence that ring systems around small objects can be dynamic rather than permanent and unchanging.

## A tiny world with an extraordinary ring system

Chariklo is a Centaur—a class of small Solar System bodies whose orbits lie between those of the giant planets. It is only about **250 kilometres (155 miles) across**, yet it has two dense rings. Their discovery in 2013 was surprising because ring systems had traditionally been associated mainly with the giant planets such as Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune.

Because Chariklo is small and extremely distant, its rings cannot easily be photographed separately from the object itself. Astronomers instead study them using a technique called a **stellar occultation**.

During an occultation, Chariklo and its rings pass in front of a distant star. As the rings block some of the star's light, astronomers can measure tiny changes in brightness and use them to reconstruct information about the rings.

## Webb reveals two rings moving in different directions

On **October 18, 2022**, researchers used JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) to observe Chariklo during such an event. The observations showed that the two rings, known as **C1R and C2R**, have changed in opposite ways.

The **inner ring, C1R, has become significantly more opaque**, meaning it blocks more light than it did in earlier observations. Meanwhile, the **outer ring, C2R, has become much weaker**, producing a substantially smaller occultation signal.

Researchers say the changes suggest that material in the rings may be moving, being lost or being redistributed. Collisions between particles could also break larger pieces into smaller grains, potentially changing how the rings interact with light. Another possibility is that the rings have different particle sizes and therefore behave differently at different wavelengths.

## Why the discovery matters

The finding challenges the idea that Chariklo's rings are relatively stable structures. Instead, they appear to be evolving on timescales of years to decades. Researchers say gravitational resonances and other interactions involving Chariklo could help reshape the rings over time.

The study also demonstrates how JWST can investigate objects that are far too small and faint for conventional direct imaging. By combining extremely sensitive infrared observations with stellar occultations, astronomers can study the structure and properties of distant ring systems in remarkable detail.

## More observations could solve the mystery

Scientists still do not know exactly what is causing the contrasting changes. Future occultations, particularly observations at visible wavelengths, could help determine whether the changes represent genuine evolution of the rings or partly reflect differences in how their particles absorb and scatter light at different wavelengths.

For now, Chariklo has become an intriguing example of how even tiny bodies in the outer Solar System can host complex and constantly changing environments. The JWST observations suggest that the story of planetary rings is not limited to the spectacular rings of Saturn—the smallest worlds may have some of the most surprising ones.
