# NASA Adds a New 34-Meter Antenna to Its Deep Space Network

When spacecraft venture millions or billions of miles from Earth, staying in touch with them requires more than powerful computers and sophisticated spacecraft hardware. It also takes enormous antennas on the ground. NASA has now strengthened that vital communications infrastructure with a new **34-meter (114-foot) antenna** at its Goldstone complex in California.

Known as **Deep Space Station 23 (DSS-23)**, the new antenna is part of NASA's effort to expand the [**Deep Space Network (DSN)**](https://www.nasa.gov/communicating-with-missions/dsn/), the global system responsible for communicating with spacecraft exploring the Moon, planets and even interstellar space. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the DSN supports more than 40 spacecraft.

## A new link to distant spacecraft

The DSN operates from three strategically positioned complexes: Goldstone in California, Madrid in Spain and Canberra in Australia. Their locations allow NASA to maintain contact with spacecraft as Earth rotates, handing communications from one complex to another as a spacecraft moves across the sky.

The new DSS-23 joins several existing antennas at Goldstone. Although it is considerably smaller than the network's enormous 70-meter dishes, 34-meter antennas provide an important combination of sensitivity, flexibility and additional capacity.

That extra capacity is becoming increasingly important as NASA and other space agencies send more missions into deep space.

## Why NASA needs more antennas

The Deep Space Network has effectively become the communications backbone of planetary exploration. It sends commands to spacecraft, receives scientific measurements and helps mission teams monitor the health of vehicles operating far from Earth.

But demand is growing.

NASA's Artemis missions, Mars spacecraft and probes traveling through the outer solar system all compete for time on the network. More spacecraft means more communications sessions, creating pressure on an infrastructure originally designed for a much smaller number of missions.

The new antenna is therefore less about replacing NASA's giant dishes and more about **adding capacity and flexibility** to the network.

## Part of a larger upgrade

DSS-23 is the **fifth of six new 34-meter antennas** planned as part of NASA's Deep Space Network Aperture Enhancement Project. The final antenna is planned for the Canberra complex in Australia, with completion expected in 2029.

The program has taken longer and cost more than originally anticipated, but its goal remains significant: modernize the ground infrastructure NASA relies on as deep-space exploration becomes increasingly ambitious.

NASA's existing 70-meter antennas remain the largest and most sensitive antennas in the network. They can track spacecraft tens of billions of miles from Earth, making them particularly valuable for missions operating at extreme distances.

## More than a giant radio dish

From the outside, DSS-23 looks like another huge radio telescope. Its real importance, however, lies in what it enables.

Every command sent to a distant spacecraft and every image, measurement or scientific observation transmitted back to Earth depends on a reliable communications link. As missions travel farther and operate for longer periods, ground-based infrastructure becomes just as important as the spacecraft themselves.

And as the agency prepares for more lunar activity and increasingly ambitious deep-space missions, that additional capacity could prove crucial.

The new antenna is a reminder that exploring deep space isn't only about building spacecraft capable of reaching distant worlds. **It is also about building the infrastructure that allows Earth to keep talking to them.**
