The feature is now generally available across Anthropic's paid Claude plans, marking a significant evolution from the experimental Chrome extension first introduced in 2025. Claude can work directly inside Chrome, reading webpages, clicking buttons, typing text, navigating between pages and filling out forms on a user's behalf. ## Claude Can Now Work Through Browser Tasks on Its Own The biggest change is the ability to let Claude continue through a multi-step browser workflow without stopping for approval after every action. In its automatic approval mode, Claude evaluates the actions it is about to take and can proceed when they are considered safe and consistent with the user's instructions. A separate safety classifier checks actions before they are performed. If an action appears unsafe or does not match the original request, Claude can block it or stop and ask the user for permission. This makes Claude in Chrome considerably more useful for repetitive work. Instead of simply telling a user what to click, Claude can actually carry out the sequence. For example, users can ask Claude to gather information from several webpages, enter information into forms, organize browser-based research or work across multiple tabs. ## It Can Use Websites Without Dedicated AI Integrations One of the more interesting aspects of Claude in Chrome is that it doesn't require every website to have an API or a dedicated Claude integration. Anthropic says Claude can interact with internal dashboards, legacy systems, vendor portals and other websites using the user's existing browser session. This potentially opens up AI automation for tools that would otherwise be difficult to connect to an AI assistant. The extension can read the page currently open in Chrome and interact with it much like a person would. It can also work across multiple tabs, making longer browser-based workflows possible. ## Claude Can Run Longer Workflows Claude in Chrome has also evolved beyond short, one-off browser commands. Anthropic's current documentation says the extension can handle complex, multi-step workflows and continue working when users switch tabs, provided Chrome remains open. It can also run scheduled browser tasks, allowing recurring workflows to be automated. The Chrome extension can also be connected with Claude Code. Developers can build an application in their terminal, open it in Chrome, and have Claude inspect the running site, read console errors and examine DOM state while debugging. That creates an interesting build-test-debug loop in which Claude can move between writing software and interacting with the resulting application in a real browser. ## Safety Remains a Major Concern Giving an AI control of a browser also introduces risks that don't exist in an ordinary chatbot conversation. A webpage can contain hidden instructions designed to manipulate an AI agent. These **prompt injection** attacks could potentially persuade an agent to perform actions that weren't actually requested by its user. Anthropic says Claude in Chrome uses safety classifiers designed to identify suspicious instructions and evaluate actions before they happen. The company has specifically tested the system against prompt-injection attacks and continues to describe browser automation as an area with inherent risks. Users can also choose a more restrictive permissions mode. In manual mode, Claude asks for approval before individual actions. Site-level permissions can further limit where Claude is allowed to operate. Sensitive or irreversible operations receive additional protection. Anthropic says purchases, financial actions and other "one-way doors" require the user to remain involved rather than allowing Claude to complete them automatically. ## Available Across Paid Claude Plans Claude in Chrome is currently available to **Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise** subscribers, although some functionality and rollout details vary by plan. Enterprise administrators can control whether employees can use the extension and which websites they can access. The extension is available through the Chrome Web Store and requires users to grant browser permissions that allow Claude to interact with webpages, tabs and other browser functions. ## A Step Toward More Autonomous AI Agents Claude in Chrome represents a broader shift in how AI assistants are being used. Traditional chatbots primarily generate information: they write text, answer questions or produce code. Browser agents take the next step by **acting on that information**. With Claude in Chrome, a user can describe a goal and allow Claude to navigate the websites, perform the intermediate steps and work toward completing the task. Anthropic's expansion of browser automation comes as the company continues developing increasingly autonomous AI systems. Its research into agent autonomy shows that Claude Code is already being used for longer-running autonomous sessions, highlighting the company's broader push toward agents capable of completing multi-step work with less continuous supervision. The challenge will be balancing that autonomy with user control.
