# A Drone Killed Three Ukrainians. It Was Guided Entirely by A.I.

A Russian attack drone that killed three civilians in southeastern Ukraine was guided and apparently targeted using an onboard artificial-intelligence system, according to Ukrainian drone specialists, military officials and forensic investigators cited in a recent investigation by *The New York Times*.

The strike occurred on July 6 near a gas station in Zaporizhzhia. The victims included Tetiana Bubynets, a 19-year-old university student, as well as Oleksiy Svirin, 41, and Roman Karpiy, 48. The drone crashed into a wall before exploding near people sheltering nearby.

What makes the attack particularly significant is that investigators believe no human pilot selected the drone's final target. Human operators programmed the aircraft to travel toward the gas station, but once it reached the area, its onboard AI apparently searched for an object matching its target profile — most likely propane tanks — and selected where to strike.

Investigators recovered an **Nvidia Jetson Orin** computer module from the wreckage. Ukrainian officials said the device contained terrain imagery used for visual navigation and software trained to recognize particular objects. Nvidia confirmed that the photographs showed a Jetson Orin module, a commercially available computer designed for AI and robotics applications.

The technology represents a major step beyond conventional drone attacks. In many AI-assisted weapons, a human operator still identifies the target before the onboard system takes over for the final stage of the attack. In this case, investigators say, the system apparently navigated toward the designated area and independently identified the object it was supposed to attack.

That capability could make such weapons harder to stop. A drone that does not depend on a continuous radio connection cannot easily be disrupted by electronic warfare, while its operator is no longer required to make the final targeting decision remotely.

The incident is also raising urgent questions about accountability and human control over weapons. The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned about the humanitarian and legal risks of autonomous weapons that can select and attack targets without human intervention.

Experts caution, however, that the complete decision-making process of the drone has not been independently reproduced, and Russia has not publicly confirmed the Ukrainian findings.

If confirmed, the Zaporizhzhia attack could mark an important turning point in modern warfare: a battlefield in which artificial intelligence is no longer merely helping humans identify targets, but is beginning to determine what to attack on its own.
