# What is an Infusion Pump?

## What is an Infusion pump?

An infusion pump is a [medical device](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39267/which-city-is-hosting-the-india-s-biggest-international-conference-on-pharmaceutical-industry-india-pharma-india-medical-device-2018) used to deliver body fluids or drugs into a patient's body. Infusion pumps were used in the late 1960s. These types of pumps deliver controlled amounts of nutrients and drugs to the patient's body. They can be operated mechanically or electrically.

These devices are mainly used in all medical [applications](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12847/how-to-choose-the-right-ethernet-cable-for-industrial-applications) for a variety of treatments. Only trained physicians can operate this pump as they know how to program the infusion time and delivery fluid flow rate. Infusion pumps are more [efficient](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/33637/three-tips-for-an-energy-efficient-home-for-2019) than manual pumps because they can deliver a controlled amount of fluid at the correct frequency, distance and volume.

Compared to manual syringe pumps, infusion pumps deliver minimal amounts of fluid and can deliver fluids at precisely programmed rates or [automatic](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/2449/what-is-automatic-reference-counting-arc) timing. These pumps deliver drugs such as insulin, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other drugs. These pumps are used in almost all hospitals, especially in intensive care units where a pump is required for each drug. You can also find an infusion pump at your nearest hospital.\
\
The infusion pump is usually controlled by an experienced user who programs the infusion rate and fluid delivery time through an [integrated](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/33532/handler-pagehandlerfactory-integrated-has-a-bad-module-managedpipelinehandler-in-its-module-list) software interface. There are many types of infusion pumps depending on purpose and environment. There are several types of infusion pumps designed primarily for use in the hospital and attached to the patient's bed. Other pumps, also known as mobile infusion pumps, are designed to move from one place to another.\

Infusion pumps can deliver small or large volumes of fluid. Infusion pumps are also used to deliver nutrients or drugs (such as pain relievers, chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, [insulin](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300379/how-to-handle-an-insuline-overdose), etc.) to the patient's body.
