Brihadeeswarar Temple – Where Even Shadows Obey Ancient Design

By MindStick

The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil, was built in the 11th century by Chola king Rajaraja I.

One of the temple’s mysteries is its vimana (tower), which casts no shadow at noon—an astonishing feat of architectural design.

Standing over 66 meters high, the temple’s vimana is one of the tallest in India. Crafted entirely from granite—transported from over 50 km awa.

The temple is adorned with detailed carvings and murals depicting gods, dancers, and mythological tales.

Now part of the Great Living Chola Temples, Brihadeeswarar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It remains an active place of worship.
