The country nearest to space is Ecuador, Mount Chimborazo.
Chimborazo, the world's tallest peak, sits at 6,263 metres due to its equatorial bulge and distance from the centre of the Earth.
However, Mount Everest, at 8,849 metres, remains the tallest mountain above sea level.
Because chimborazo is near the equator, it experiences less gravity than locations farther from the equator.
Ecuador's tropical location provides a broad range of environments, adding credence to the country's claim to be "closer to the heavens."
