Why was the weekend invented?

By MindStick

The reason behind the creation of “weekends” was to alter work patterns as workers were working long and stressful hours.

Its origins can be traced back to ancient religious observances, Sabbath in Judaism and Sunday in Christianity, which established a weekly rest day.

The Industrial Revolution introduced long hours, leading to labor movements advocating for shorter hours and improved conditions.

In 1926, Henry Ford introduced a five-day workweek to boost productivity among factory workers, a decision that influenced other companies to follow.

Later, The Fair Labour Standards Act of 1938 imposed a 40-hour workweek for most employees, including a two-day weekend for relaxation.
