History of Ink

By MindStick

Since ancient civilisations Ink has been used, with the first inks made from lampblack combined with gum arabic or egg white.

Egyptians, Chinese, Romans, India and other ancient cultures utilised this sort of ink to write on papyrus, bamboo, and other materials.

Iron gallate, carbon, and coloured inks were used by European scribes during the Middle Ages for manuscript decorating & map construction.

In the 15th century, the printing press revolutionised ink manufacture by needing faster-drying, water-based pigments used in early printing presses.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, several ink technologies, such as ballpoint pen ink, fountain pen ink, and inkjet printer ink, were created.
